Himachal Pradesh has experienced 73% less rainfall than normal between January 1 and 22, 2025. While the normal rainfall during this period is 54 mm, the state has only received 14.7 mm. District-wise, Bilaspur recorded a 91% deficit, followed by Hamirpur (91%), Kangra (90%), Kinnaur (88%), Solan (87%), Mandi (75%) and Shimla (71%). Farmers and horticulturists are hoping for improved rain and snowfall in the coming days.
According to the Meteorological Center in Shimla, the weather will remain unfavorable from the late night of January 22 to the evening of January 23. Light snowfall is expected in Shimla, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti districts, with moderate snowfall likely in the higher reaches of Sirmaur and Kullu. Solan, Mandi, Shimla, Kullu, Sirmaur, and Kinnaur may witness light rain in isolated areas, while Chamba, Kangra, Una, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur may see occasional light showers. Popular tourist destinations like Naldehra, Manali, Kufri, Narkanda, Solang Valley, and Sissu are also likely to experience light snowfall along with moderate rainfall.
From January 24 to 28, the weather is expected to remain clear across the state. Shimla and other regions saw sunny skies today. The maximum temperature on January 22 is expected to rise by 2-3°C, followed by a significant drop of 4-5°C in the next 24 hours. The minimum temperature is not expected to change significantly in the next two days but may gradually decline by 2-3°C in some areas. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely in Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur late on January 22. A yellow alert for cold wave conditions has been issued for January 23 and 24 in select areas, accompanied by dense fog in the lower hills during the early morning and late night hours.
