Amit Shah directs formation of multi-sectoral central team for Himachal in view of rising natural disasters

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed the formation of a multi-sectoral central team in view of the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters in Himachal Pradesh. The central team will include experts from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune, a geologist, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore.

This directive from the Union Minister follows a recent meeting where he was informed that the state has witnessed a rise in incidents such as cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, and heavy rainfall, which have caused massive loss of life and property, damage to infrastructure, disruption of livelihoods, and environmental degradation.

In addition, considering the monsoon-triggered floods, flash floods, and landslides reported from various parts of the state during the southwest monsoon of 2025, the Centre has already deployed an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to assess the damages directly on the ground, even before receiving any formal memorandum from the state.

The IMCT began its visit to the affected areas on July 18 and will continue its assessment until July 21.

Under the chairmanship of the Union Home Minister, a High-Level Committee has already approved a relief package of ₹2006.40 crore for the recovery and reconstruction of areas affected by floods, landslides, and cloudbursts in the year 2023. Of this amount, ₹451.44 crore was released as the first installment on July 7, 2025.

Further, to support those affected in the state, the Central Government had also released the first installment of the central share amounting to ₹198.80 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) on June 18, 2025, for immediate relief measures.

At present, a total of 13 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are deployed in Himachal Pradesh for rescue and relief operations. According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), around 119 people have lost their lives across the state since the onset of the monsoon season on June 20.

As per the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) report issued on July 19, public infrastructure has been severely disrupted, with 146 roads still blocked, 28 electricity transformers out of service, and 58 water supply schemes affected.

On July 15, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had also met Union Minister Amit Shah to brief him about the monsoon-related damages and had sought central assistance.
