Himachal government has closed 143 schools with only two students strength. The education department has denotified 117 primary and 26 middle schools. All the children studying in these schools will be shifted to nearby schools. The teachers appointed here will be sent to schools where only one or two teachers are appointed.
6 in Bilaspur, 8 in Chamba, 4 in Hamirpur, 17 in Kangra, 5 in Kinnaur, 4 in Kullu, 19 in Lahaul-Spiti, 18 in Mandi, 25 in Shimla, 3 in Sirmaur, 7 in Solan and 1 primary school in Una while 7 middle schools have been closed in Lahaul-Spiti, 5 in Mandi, 6 in Shimla and 1 in Sirmaur.
Last May, the state government downgraded the status of 90 schools with less number of students that were upgraded after April 1, 2022 during the previous BJP government. This action was taken due to less admissions in these schools.
Furthermore, it has been decided to reopen 20 secondary schools. On May 29, 2023, these schools were denotified due to the number of students being less than 20. Now on increasing registrations, it has been decided to reopen these schools. Notification has been issued to open three senior secondary schools each in district Sirmaur-Chamba, five each in Shimla-Mandi, two each in Kangra and Mandi.
