DGP Sanjay Kundu retired on Tuesday after serving 35 years in the police department. In such a situation, discussions have started regarding the name of the new police chief in the state. However, no notification was issued regarding the new DGP till late evening. In view of the code of conduct, the state government has already sought permission from the Election Commission for the appointment of a new DGP. In such a situation, a notification regarding the new DGP will be issued only after getting permission from the Central Election Commission.
These three names are being discussed for the new DGP. These include SR Ojha of 1989 batch, Shyam Bhagat Negi of 1990 batch and Dr. Atul Verma of 1991 batch. Ojha is currently DG (Prison). Negi, who belongs to Kinnaur district, is currently on central deputation, while Dr. Verma is currently the CID chief. It is believed that one of these three will be appointed as the new head of the police department.
