Crackdown on land encroachment: DC Shimla enforces arms ban in Kotkhai’s Chaithla before eviction drive

In compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble High Court of Himachal Pradesh, the Forest Department is set to remove apple orchards illegally developed on forest land by encroachers. In view of the anticipated enforcement action, the District Magistrate of Shimla, Anupam Kashyap, has imposed a temporary ban on carrying arms in Chaithla village, Tehsil Kotkhai, District Shimla. The restriction will remain in effect until 18 July 2025.

This order does not apply to police personnel, paramilitary forces, government and non-government authorized security staff.

All licensed firearm holders in Chaithla village have been directed to deposit their weapons at Kotkhai Police Station by 12 July 2025. These will remain in police custody until the enforcement operation concludes on 18 July.

This move comes as part of the state’s broader effort to reclaim large tracts of illegally encroached forest land in Shimla district. Over the years, several individuals have reportedly cleared forest areas and planted apple orchards, occupying government land in violation of forest laws. The upcoming eviction drive marks a significant step toward addressing such long-standing encroachments.
