Sui Mata was the queen of King Sahil Varman, the ruler who founded Chamba. When the town was being established, there was a severe water shortage. The king tried everything to solve the problem, including religious rituals, but nothing worked. He was told that a great sacrifice was needed — the life of someone from the royal family, either his son or wife.

With a heavy heart, King Sahil decided to offer his son. But Queen Sui couldn’t bear to lose her child. Instead, she chose to sacrifice herself for the people of Chamba. With immense courage, she gave up her life, and soon after, the water flowed freely in the region, bringing prosperity to Chamba.

To honor her, the Sui Mata Temple was built at Saho village, near Chamba. Though the temple is small, it holds great spiritual significance. Inside, you’ll find paintings telling the story of Sui Mata and her sacrifice. It is believed that she and her attendants were buried near the temple.

The temple is made up of three parts: the staircase leading to the temple, the pathway connecting the temple, and the memorial dedicated to Sui Mata. Devotees often feel a deep sense of peace as they visit.

Every year, from March 15 to April 1, the Sui Mata Festival is celebrated. During this time, women and girls dress in traditional attire and make offerings at the temple. Folk songs and dances celebrate her life, and the entire region comes alive with devotion and joy.
