Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan appointed as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand

Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan of Himachal High Court will be the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court. This was recommended in the meeting of the Supreme Court Collegium held today (Monday). Apart from Jharkhand, the appointment of Chief Justice has also been recommended in Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Patna High Court.

Tarlok Chauhan has also served as Acting Chief Justice of Himachal High Court twice. He was born on 9 January 1964 in Rohru of Shimla district. He received his primary education from Bishop Cotton School, Shimla. During this period, he was also the captain of the school.

Graduating with honours from DAV College Chandigarh, he became a lawyer in the year 1989 after obtaining a law degree from Punjab University Chandigarh. Lala Chhabil Das joined the eminent chamber of senior advocates. He started practising in the state High Court and mastered all the fields of law.

Apart from the State Electricity Board Limited and the State Civil Supply Corporation, he was a legal advisor to many boards, corporations, financial institutions, public and private companies, educational institutions and cooperative societies and various departments. He became a member of various Lok Adalats.

Court Friends were appointed by the High Court to assist in several important cases relating to hydro projects, ropeways, violations of environmental laws, ban on plastic and tobacco products, implementation of solid waste management projects and formulation of road construction policy in Himachal Pradesh.

After being appointed as Additional Judge of High Court on 23 February 2014, he was made a permanent judge of the High Court on 30 November 2014. As the Chairman of the Juvenile Justice Committee of the High Court from 5 May 2014, he worked for the welfare and benefit of the children of Bal/Balika Ashram, Himachal Hospital, Mental Health and Rehabilitation Shimla and Old Age Home of Himachal Pradesh.

Apart from participating in various national and international conferences, he was also part of the Conference on the theme “Judiciary and the Changing World” from 21st February 2020 to 23rd February 2020 at the Supreme Court, New Delhi in which he was one of the members among the Judges of 3 High Courts.

He was part of the International Learning Exchange Programme on “Reform of Care and Protection Services for Children” in Romania from 13th to 17th May 2019. He is the first High Court Judge to have participated in international conferences abroad.

Tarlok Chauhan was also a member of the Governing Council and the Executive Council of Himachal Pradesh National Law University Shimla from 12 November 2016. He was the President of the Judicial Academy from 18 November 2018 to 13 March 2020. Being the head of the Computer and E-Court Committee in the High Court, he is credited with taking computerization to new heights in the High Court as well as subordinate courts.
