From 127th to 97th: NIT Hamirpur now among top 100 engineering institutions

NIT hamirpur NIRF Rank

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Hamirpur has made a significant comeback in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, returning to the top 100 institutions in the engineering category. The institute improved by 30 positions, rising from 127th rank in 2024 to 97th this year.

The improvement marks a positive turnaround for the institution, which had been experiencing a declining trend in rankings for several years. In the architecture and planning category, NIT Hamirpur secured the 30th position out of 40 ranked institutions.

According to Registrar Archana Nanoti, the improvement reflects the dedicated efforts of all departments and staff over the past two years. “The institute has achieved 97th position in NIRF engineering category rankings. We have obtained 30th rank out of 40 in architecture and planning. There will be further improvement in rankings next year. Credit goes to all departments and staff of the institute. We will work harder in the coming time to make the ranking even better,” she stated.

Steady decline reversed after institutional reforms

The ranking improvement comes after nearly two years of institutional reforms and focused efforts to enhance academic performance. Prior to 2023, NIT Hamirpur had been experiencing a consistent downward trend in rankings, but the past two years have shown gradual recovery.

The NIRF ranking system, which began in 2016, evaluates institutions based on teaching, learning and resources, research output, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. Key parameters include student numbers including doctoral students, faculty-student ratio, financial resources and their utilization, research publications, patents, and faculty-student proportions.

Historical ranking trajectory shows recovery

NIT Hamirpur’s ranking history reveals the challenges and recent recovery. The institute started at 51st position when NIRF rankings began in 2016. The ranking declined to 57th in 2017, further dropping to 64th in 2018. A slight improvement occurred in 2019 with the 60th position, but the decline resumed with rankings of 98th in 2020, 99th in 2021, and reaching the lowest point of 127th in 2023.

The current improvement to 97th position represents a significant step in the institute’s efforts to regain its academic standing and demonstrates the positive impact of recent institutional changes and enhanced focus on research and academic excellence.

This recovery indicates that NIT Hamirpur’s strategic initiatives over the past two years are yielding results, positioning the institute for continued improvement in future rankings.
