Senior IPS officer Rakesh Aggarwal has been appointed as Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday. He was previously serving as Special Director General of the agency. The appointment has been cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Rakesh Aggarwal is a 1994 batch Indian Police Service officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre. He has nearly three decades of service experience and has worked in several important positions. He is known for his discipline-focused approach, technical proficiency, and strategic thinking. Considering his understanding of security matters and administrative efficiency, he has been entrusted with major responsibility in the NIA.

Aggarwal played a key role in NIA investigations into Left-Wing Extremism cases affecting internal security. He also oversaw probes into ISIS-linked modules operating across multiple Indian states. He brings decades of experience in counter-terrorism and internal security to his new role as Director General of the premier anti-terror investigation agency.
