“Milestones are achieved by those whose dreams have life; wings mean nothing, it’s courage that makes you soar.” Lagnesh Kumar from Barota village in Ghumarwin sub-division has given true meaning to this saying. Overcoming adverse circumstances and physical challenges, Lagnesh has become Himachal Pradesh’s first visually impaired advocate after completing his law education. He is not only practicing at Ghumarwin Civil Court but has also emerged as an inspiration for society.
In 2009, what appeared to be a routine eye infection gradually filled the world of the then-young Lagnesh with darkness. Despite treatment at major hospitals, the 33-year-old completely lost his eyesight. Following his father’s death, the family’s financial situation became precarious. His mother worked as an Anganwadi helper to run the household, but she never let her son’s dreams fade.
Lagnesh completed his graduation in 2016 and then decided to pursue law. Amid resource constraints, the KK Foundation recognized his talent and provided financial assistance. In 2020, Lagnesh earned his LLB degree from Delhi University’s prestigious Campus Law Centre.
Lagnesh’s struggle had such an impact that the Bar Council of Himachal Pradesh had to amend its regulations. Recognizing his financial situation and dedication, the Bar Council not only registered him but also created a policy for the future that no registration fee would be charged from any differently-abled advocate.
Today, Lagnesh Kumar practices law at Ghumarwin Civil Court, becoming a beacon of hope for countless others facing similar challenges. His journey from losing his vision to creating legal history demonstrates that determination and willpower can overcome any obstacle.
His mother’s unwavering support and his own resilience have proven that physical limitations cannot restrict those who have the courage to dream and the determination to achieve.
