Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in Himachal from July 19–22, IMD Shimla issues alert

Meteorological Centre, Shimla, under the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has issued a heavy rainfall warning for several parts of Himachal Pradesh over the coming days, urging residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.

According to the forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely across multiple districts between July 19 and 22, with isolated heavy rain also possible on July 18 and July 23.

Districts particularly at risk include Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Kullu, Sirmaur, and Hamirpur, along with other mid and lower hill districts, where heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted at scattered locations. Strong winds blowing at 30 to 40 kilometres per hour are also expected in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti between July 18 and 23. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds accompanying rain remain likely across plains and mid-hill areas through the period.

Over the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall was recorded across several parts of the state. Nagrota Suriyan received the highest rainfall at 28.8 mm, followed by Gaggal at 10.2 mm, Murari Devi at 4.0 mm, Guler at 2.8 mm, Palampur at 2.4 mm, and Dharamshala at 2.1 mm. Una recorded the highest maximum temperature of the period at 38°C, while Keylong logged the lowest minimum at 12.2°C.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue across most parts of the state from July 18 through July 23, with the intensity picking up significantly between July 19 and 22.

The department has appealed to residents and tourists to stay alert, monitor weather updates regularly, and avoid venturing into vulnerable areas during this period.
