Be prepared, not scared: HPSDMA issues monsoon safety advisory with round-the-clock helplines

NDMA Helpline numbers

With the monsoon season setting in, the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) has issued a comprehensive set of safety guidelines for residents and tourists across the state, and activated round-the-clock helpline services to assist those in need.

The state disaster helpline number 1070 and the district disaster helpline number 1077 will remain operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the monsoon season. Anyone facing an emergency — be it a landslide, road blockage, cloudbursts, or any other disaster-related situation — can call these numbers for immediate assistance.

The authority has advised both tourists and locals to check weather forecasts and disaster alerts before commencing any journey. Travellers have been urged to keep offline maps downloaded on their mobile phones and to check on current road conditions with locals or the administration before heading out. Vehicles should carry a first aid kit, sufficient drinking water, and an emergency kit at all times.

HPSDMA has also asked people to identify potential risks in their areas in advance and remain alert to threats including heavy rainfall, landslides, cloudbursts, earthquakes, fires, and industrial accidents. The authority emphasised that timely alertness, accurate information, and prior preparedness are the most effective tools against disaster.

Special attention has been drawn to the safety of vulnerable groups — children, the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities. Evacuation and relief plans for these groups should be prepared in advance, and in the event of a disaster, they will be given priority in being moved to safe locations.

The authority has urged people not to panic in an emergency and instead call 1070 or 1077 immediately. Following instructions from local administration and disaster management officials, and staying updated on rescue, relief, and first aid procedures, has been strongly recommended.
